Two 20th-century monographs on The Magic Flute—Jacques Chailley’s Magic Flute, Masonic Opera (tr. H. Weinstock, Alfred A. Knopf, 1971), and Alfons Rosenberg’s Die Zauberflöte, Gesichte und Deutung von Mozart’s Oper (Prestel Verlag, 1972—pointed out that the opera used Rosicrucian symbols and tracts as sources of the alchemical union of Tamino and Pamina, and that these sources were The Magic Flute opera (originally composed as Die Zauberflöte) is the work of the famous baroque music composer – Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 – 1791) and Viennese librettist – Johann Emmanuel Schikaneder (1751 – 1812)..

Today, The Magic Flute is often performed translated into the local language. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was part of a Mason Lodge, and the opera is full of references to Masonry and it’s symbols.

HCO presents one full-length opera each February with an entirely undergraduate cast and production team. In 2020, HCO presented Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute). During the spring semester each year, HCO’s Board of Operators names the next music and stage directors, in collaboration with whom the next opera is chosen.
